Breed Comparison

English vs French vs American Bulldog: Which One Suits Your Home?

They share a name and almost nothing else. Choosing between them is really a question about your living space, your climate and how much walking you want to do.

People arrive certain they want a bulldog and unsure which one. The three breeds diverge sharply on size, energy and heat tolerance, and picking the wrong one is the most common source of regret we see.

The English Bulldog

The archetype: broad, low, heavy-boned, and astonishingly placid. An English Bulldog is a companion animal in the fullest sense — it wants to be in the room with you, on the cool tile, breathing loudly, doing nothing in particular. They are excellent with children because they are almost impossible to provoke.

The trade-offs are real. They are brachycephalic, so heat is genuinely dangerous rather than merely uncomfortable; they should not be exercised in the middle of a hot day and should never be left in a car. They need their facial folds and tail pocket cleaned and dried weekly. They snore. Well-bred, moderately built English Bulldogs live comfortably to nine or ten; extremely flat-faced, overly heavy ones do not.

The French Bulldog

The same temperament in a body a third of the size. Frenchies suit apartments, first-time owners and anyone who wants a dog that travels well. They are more playful and more vocally expressive than English Bulldogs — not barking, but a running commentary of grumbles.

They share the brachycephalic heat problem, and they add a spinal one: the screw-tail conformation is associated with hemivertebrae, so intervertebral disc disease appears more often than in the other two. They also cost the most, and the market is flooded with badly bred ones.

The American Bulldog

Genuinely a different animal. American Bulldogs are working dogs — tall, athletic, driven, with a normal muzzle and normal breathing. They will run with you, hike with you, and need to. Under-exercised American Bulldogs become destructive, and a bored 100-pound dog is a real problem.

They are the healthiest of the three by some distance and the cheapest to buy, but they need an experienced, active owner with space and a fence. They are not a compact-living breed and they are not a low-effort breed.

Choosing

  • Apartment, city, no yard, wants a lap dog: French Bulldog.
  • House, family with young children, low activity, wants a calm presence: English Bulldog.
  • Active household, land or a big fenced yard, wants a dog to hike and train: American Bulldog.
  • Hot climate with limited air conditioning: American Bulldog, or reconsider a bulldog entirely.
  • First dog, willing to do weekly fold care: English or French.

Common questions

Size and little else in temperament. English Bulldogs weigh 40 to 55 pounds and stand low and broad; French Bulldogs weigh 18 to 28 pounds with upright bat ears. Both are calm, affectionate, low-exercise companions that tolerate heat poorly. Frenchies live slightly longer and suit apartments better; English Bulldogs are sturdier around boisterous children.

The American Bulldog, clearly. It has a normal-length muzzle and no brachycephalic airway compromise, typically lives 10 to 14 years, and avoids most of the breathing, eye and skin problems the other two are prone to. The trade-off is that it needs an hour or more of real exercise a day.

English and French Bulldogs are among the best breeds for young children — they are placid, tolerant of handling and very hard to provoke. American Bulldogs are good with children too, but their size and drive mean they need structured training and supervision around toddlers.

English and French Bulldogs can, but only with reliable air conditioning, walks restricted to early morning and evening, and no exercise above roughly 80°F. Their shortened airways cannot cool them efficiently and heatstroke can develop within minutes. American Bulldogs handle heat considerably better.

A French Bulldog for apartment living, an English Bulldog for a house. Both are calm, trainable enough for a novice and undemanding on exercise. Neither is maintenance-free — both need weekly fold cleaning and careful heat management — but neither requires the handling experience an American Bulldog does.
